Dr. William Simpson
Doc At Your Door:
A Step Back to the Past
for a Better Patient Future
Like most doctors,
licensed internist
Dr. William
Simpson saw his
patients out of an
office for many
years--25,
to
be exact. As of
four weeks ago,
however, the work
life of this seasoned
physician
looks
very different. That's because he
founded
Doc At Your Door, a mobile
unit that makes house calls seven days
a week, 24 hours a day to patients in
Fauquier and surrounding counties.
Doctors making house calls may seem
like a quaint notion, but a quick Google
search reveals that Dr. Simpson isn't
the only practitioner looking to this
slower-paced, more personal system of
interacting with patients. "I ultimately got
into this so I could spend as much time
with patients as they need," explains Dr.
Simpson. "Under the current insurance
system, doctors are encouraged to
keep patient visits brief. Some people
have complex medical issues and
need more time with their doctor. This
seemed like a great opportunity to help
people on their terms."
House calls declined sharply around
the 1960s in favor of offices that could
take on higher volumes of patients. But
the elimination of house calls hasn't
necessarily made things more efficient.
Many people, especially home bound
or "home limited" individuals, must
arrange for family members to take off
work to get a ride to an appointment.
Folks coming in for wellness checks
often find themselves waiting with
people who have contagious ailments.
Add that to the ever-shrinking window
of time in which patients actually get
to consult with a doctor, and suddenly
the thought of a house call seems
practical--perhaps even preferable.
Dr. Simpson has advanced training
and experience in geriatric, wound,
nursing home, rehabilitation, and
home care, as well as health services
administration. Patients pay an hourly
fee for a house call, which can be
broken down by the minute for shorter
visits. To learn more or to schedule an
appointment, call
1 (833) 362-8800.
