ARTfactory, located in Historic Downtown
Manassas, was founded in 1984 by a group
of local artists and art enthusiasts. Their
mission was simple yet profound: to enrich the
community through the creative arts. With the
support of the community, volunteers, patrons,
and sponsors, ARTfactory is celebrating its
40th anniversary this year--a remarkable
achievement for a nonprofi t organization.
Previously known as the Center for the Arts,
ARTfactory is housed in the building that
once was the Hopkins Candy Factory. Open
Tuesday through Sunday, they currently
offer an art gallery, theatre arts, visual arts
education, dance classes, Arts on the GoTM,
summer camps, and a SummerSounds
Concert Series; each year, it hosts over
43,000 visitors. The building is also available
for rent for family functions, corporate events,
weddings, and more.
Talya Conroy has served as the executive
director since July 2022. However, her
association with ARTfactory began much
earlier. At the age of 11, after moving to
Manassas from the United Kingdom with her
parents, Talya, who had a passion for theatre,
performing, and the arts in the UK, joined the
Pied Piper Theatre, where she met her fi rst
American friends.
A nationally recognized program for young
performers ages 818, the Pied Piper Theatre
continues to foster creativity and cultivate
friendships. Rooftop Productions, the theatre
company for adults, was recently honored
with a Washington Area Theatre Community
Honors (WATCH) award--a prestigious
recognition in the arts community.
The senior citizen theatre group, Past
Time Prime Time Players, operates
in conjunction with the local senior
center. Collectively, these groups
stage a total of 16 productions each
year. The ARTfactory also offers 160
performing arts classes annually.
Throughout the year, individuals ages
fi ve and older can take advantage of
the education wing's additional 150+
classes that range from beginner
to advanced and encompass a
wide range of subjects, including watercolor,
acrylics, pastels, oils, drawing, dancing,
cartooning, graphic design, journaling, book
making, photography, and sculpture.
"We try to touch all facets of art so people can
fi nd an interest in something," Talya says. "We
believe in supporting our two most vulnerable
populations, which are children and the
elderly," she adds.
Talya explains that they're trying to solidify
funding so they can continue to provide free
programming to the Manassas Senior Center,
lower-cost classes for children and other
underserved community segments, as well as
provide discounted rates on mental wellness
classes.
The art gallery hosts 12 exhibits annually,
featuring local, regional, and occasional
international artists; these exhibits are free and
open to the public. In addition, the ARTfactory
holds events to celebrate the community's
diverse cultures.
Arts on the GoTM, a trademarked STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,
and Math) educational program, consists
of modules designed and constructed by
ARTfactory staff. These modules are provided
to local schools at no cost for two-week
periods. The ARTfactory also participates
in community outreach with Manassas City
Public Schools and Prince William County
Public Schools.
Summer art and theatre camps, lasting one
to three weeks and available as half-day
or full-day sessions, are offered to children
ages 518. These camps conclude with a
performance for the community, featuring an
art show and a reception for family and friends.
Furthermore, the ARTfactory offers up to fi ve
free outdoor concerts called SummerSounds
Concert Series that highlight a variety of
musical styles each summer.
Special thanks are extended to the 40th
Anniversary sponsors: Didlake, Farrell &
Croft, InsideNoVa, The Irving Law Firm,
