Almost all homeowners are afraid of
electricity--you'll never know when
touching something may shock you!
Here are a few tips for approaching
electricity at home:
1. Are you in an "old home?" If
you have screw-in breakers, the
answer is yes, and you should
call an electrician immediately.
Changing out the panel, which is
necessary, costs between $1,000
and $2,500, depending on the
home.
2. Visually inspect your fuse panel
box or breaker panel annually.
Open the door and hold your hand
away from the breakers; if you feel
any warmth, call an electrician. Be
aware that panels manufactured
by Federal Pacific, ITE Pushmatic,
Zinsco, and GTE/Sylvania are no
longer manufactured and pose
electrical hazards.
3. Outlets: if you feel heat emanating
from one, don't plug anything
into it and remove anything else
plugged into it.
4. Keep an eye on lights. Flickering
lights may indicate the need for
repair to an outlet or panel--or
you may have too many things
plugged into a single outlet.
5. Older appliances may have
grounding issues that put you
at risk for a shock. Ensure all
appliances have three-pronged
plugs that can properly connect
to a grounded outlet. Any kitchen
appliances with just two-pronged
plugs should be replaced. Outlets
that aren't grounded should also
be replaced and a new circuit
installed.
6. Get a new fire extinguisher--they
have life spans, as do battery-
powered smoke alarms and CO2
detectors. If you're not sure how
long you've had them, change
them--it could save your family
members' lives.
Electrical work is inherently dangerous.
Professional electricians undergo years
of training and on-the-job experience
before they are granted a license. Use
discretion when attempting your own
electrical work. To ensure all of your
home's electrical systems are safe, up-
to-code, and working as they should,
hire a trusted electrician to handle the
job.
