The tagline of
Vera's Kitchen,
"Desta," translates to "happiness"
in Amharic, Ethiopia's primary
language. Six years ago, Vera
Musie, who was born in Ethiopia,
opened her restaurant in Historic
Downtown Manassas, aiming
to serve happiness and joy with
every dish. As a professional
chef, Vera's creations--a fusion
of Ethiopian and American
cuisine--are both delicious and
healthy. Vera emphasizes the
power of food, saying, "Food
is the ultimate unifi er. I want
people to experience our rich,
close-knit culture by trying
Ethiopian food while
they're in America."
Among the popular
dishes, the vegan
Beyaynetu stands
out, featuring an
assortment of lentils,
collard greens,
mushrooms, cabbage,
split peas, and
chickpeas. Meat lovers
enjoy favorites like Siga
Alcha, beef cubes seasoned with
onion, garlic, ginger, and turmeric,
and Beg Wot, spicy lamb cubes
prepared with Berbere sauce. All
dishes are served with Teff Injera,
a sour, fermented, pancake-like
fl atbread made from gluten-free
teff--an ancient, small grain--
that completes the authentic
culinary experience.
Vera's Kitchen:
Serving Happiness
in a Dish
Vera's Kitchen serves a variety
of appetizers, soups, salads,
sandwiches, main dishes, and
desserts, including vegetable
Sambusa, (three fried vegetable
pastries), lentil soup, pasta
salad, tomato-basil quiche, tuna
wraps, and toasted almond cake.
For coffee enthusiasts, Ethiopian
coffee beans are slow-roasted in
a frying pan, and the rich, fresh
coffee is served in a pot for two,
accompanied by traditional small
cups called "sini." Customers
may also purchase bags of
freshly ground coffee or coffee
beans.
Vera is fond of her Historic
Downtown Manassas location
and her loyal customers. She
explains that although she is
running a business, she is also
committed to supporting the
community and other small
businesses, highlighting the
importance of mutual help and
support.
In addition to in-house dining,
Vera's offers carryout, delivery,
and catering for weddings
and special events. For more
