Rice Co. to Rice Hardware, we want people to know that we are two female owners with ample experience in hardware Sarah Pitkin and Amy Monroe stores—we just like to think we’ve made it a lit t le prettier,” Sarah says. Located on Mathis Avenue in Manassas, Rice Hardware has retained much of its old-time charm while adding some great products. In the expanded BBQ section, you’ll find Big Green Egg, Traeger, and Weber grills, along with a selection of chips, chunks, charcoal, and logs. The paint and sundries department features Benjamin Moore paints, Purdy brushes, and a superb selection of Minwax colors. In the lawn and garden area, you’ll find live plants, special soils for specific plants, garden watering and planting items—and so much more. They also offer outdoor furniture and décor, including tables, chairs, rocking chairs, Adirondack chairs, fire pits, Tiki supplies, flags, and fun statuary. One of Amy’s main roles is purchasing, especially fun items for the store, whereas Sarah concentrates on back-office tasks, helps with merchandising, and enjoys “stretching the walls” for new products. Each of the hardware stores sells certain types of items for distinct types of customers. “Amy and I enjoy ribbing each other for some strange purchases we have brought in to sell,” Sarah says. “Sometimes we make bets on whether certain items will sell. We won’t tell you who has won more of the bets!” Sarah mentions how fortunate they are to have such great store managers, sales associates, and cashiers who know the products and systems. She emphasizes that they are part of her and her sister’s hardware store family. Dr. John (Jack) Martin, director, and Jill Tomlinson, accompanist. Its mission is to promote greater appreciation and enjoyment of both classical and contemporary quality music within the greater Manassas community. Starting with 25 members, the Chorale has grown to 100— though it has rebuilt to 80 members since the pandemic—over 30 years and now performs four annual concerts at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Additionally, they perform at various community events, churches, and assisted living facilities. In 2008, the Chorale initiated Concerts with a Cause, collecting essential items for local humanitarian organizations. It also hosts the Voices United Festival Choir, featuring nationally known clinicians, and supports the Greater Manassas Children’s Choir, which offers vocal training and performance opportunities to children from kindergarten through eighth grade. The Chorale benefits from dedicated staff members, many of whom have served for years. Rebecca (Becky) Verner, who joined in 1995, has been the artistic director since 1997. Kristina Schenck became the accompanist in 2016. “Our singers not only love to sing and present concerts for our community and beyond; they also forge strong friendships and support one another,” Becky shares. “Those who move away often tell us how much they miss the Chorale and how meaningful it still is to them. To me, that’s priceless!” Jennifer Blanchard has been a member since 2001 and executive director since 2015. “I would like the community to be aware that we have been a longstanding performing group in the Manassas area,” Jennifer says. “In addition to our scheduled concerts, we perform pro bono at various events, including groundbreakings, receptions, and local ceremonies.” Diana Van Broekhoven, a past president with 25 years in the Chorale, fondly recalls performing at the historic Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg during their annual Christmas Candlelight Concerts, as well as at the National Cathedral and Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. Memorable tours in Germany and France are among her highlights, with a particularly notable moment on July 4, 2011, when they performed “God Bless America” while overlooking miles of white crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. “I love to sing, and the Manassas Chorale has been the perfect place for that,” Diana shares. “Our director, though wellknown to your readers, has significantly contributed to making the Chorale a joyful and respectful community for all of us.” Patrick Gillespie is another long-term instrumentalist. “I have played trombone in the orchestra of the Chorale for over 25 years, since I was a student at Stonewall Jackson High School,” he says. “Becky always incorporates local performers, teachers, and students in the orchestra, making it truly feel like a family. I look forward to the 30th anniversary concert!” Alex Iqbal joined the Chorale this past fall. “It’s a truly special thing to be part of a community united by our love for singing, in the hometown that I grew up in!” he says. Linda Seagears, a longtime choir singer, deepened her passion for choral music by supporting her four children’s musical pursuits. She joined the Chorale just before Christmas last year, further enriching her love for the art in her later years. “After my first concert with the Chorale, my grown children thanked me for joining, noting that they had never had the opportunity to support me in one of my concerts,” Linda says. “The Manassas Chorale is a real delight.” High school and adult singers from the greater Manassas area are invited to audition at the beginning of rehearsals for any concert. While most members join in the fall with rehearsals starting in August, auditions are open at the beginning of each concert segment. The Chorale presents four concerts annually, typically scheduled for October, December, March, and May or June. It is the largest veterans service organization in the nation. Virginia hosts 219 posts, including American Legion Post 10. Established in 1986 and located on Cockrell Road in Manassas, Post 10 is the third largest in Northern Virginia, with a membership of 813. Continuing the legacy of leadership, David Quimby serves as the commander supports flag ceremonies, ROTC programs, and various educational and youth programs such as Boys State, American Legion Baseball, and the Boy Scouts. It also maintains involvement with Wreaths Across America. Children & Youth focuses on the wellbeing of all children, particularly those of veterans and servicemembers, by addressing their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs through programs like Flags for First Graders, Boys and Girls State, and Toys for Tots. In addition to these efforts, Post 10 actively supports veterans by delivering Thanksgiving dinners to those in assisted living facilities, providing transpor tation to hospitals, and securing safe overnight accommodations. “The American Legion services all veterans from all branches, 24/7,” David says. The post also responds compassionately to the needs of families during the passing of a veteran, coordinating with funeral homes, offering support, and providing military honors among other services. Members enjoy a vibrant community life, receiving a monthly newsletter and an events calendar that includes barbecues, picnics, veteran memorial remembrances, community events, parades, and celebrations. Notably, Post 10 is known for its Friday Night Seafood menu and its Monday morning Bingo sessions. For veterans interested in joining the American Legion, they must present their DD Form 214, Discharge Papers, and Separation Documents. Those honorably discharged are eligible for membership. Moreover, men whose parents or grandparents served in the military may join The Sons of the American Legion, and descendants of Legion members may join the American Legion Auxiliary. Although the agriculture program launched when the school opened its doors, in 1989 its focus shifted from traditional agronomy and animal mechanics to horticulture, turf, and landscaping, reflecting the evolving needs of the community and broader educational trends. By the 2015–2016 academic year, the program had been revamped to align with growing industries such as urban garden design, nursery management, sports field maintenance, and landscape architecture. This redesign emphasized hands-on learning with industry-grade equipment and courses that develop leadership, teamwork, and business skills. Currently, about 20% of the student body, or approximately 160 students, participate in the agriculture program. BDHS’ agriculture program is supported by a dedicated team of instructors and coordinators. Matt Carbo has been the specialty program coordinator of the Cambridge and Agriculture programs since 2014. Dr. Drew Miller, who joined in 2017, teaches Turf Management and Landscaping II, and sponsors the Brentsville Turf Grass Club. Amy Beard, who began her tenure in 2018, teaches Horticulture and sponsors the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. Additionally, Richard Adams started teaching Landscaping I this academic year, further enriching the faculty’s expertise and the program’s offerings. The introductory horticultural science class offers practical learning in various green industry sectors, including planting, greenhouse management, floral design, and hydroponics. Students also tackle the business aspects of running a greenhouse and maintaining hydroponic systems while being introduced to the National FFA organization. Foundational to the program’s success, the Turf Management class focuses on the practicalities of professional turf management using commercial-grade equipment and facilitates collaboration with industry professionals to enhance career opportunities. In landscape courses, students utilize skills developed in earlier years to engage in hands-on activities with industry-grade equipment on school grounds, focusing on employability skills such as teamwork and leadership. They also participate in work-based learning and manage an outreach program that assists local schools with various landscaping projects. Constructed in 2020, the state-of-the-art BDHS greenhouse hosts year-round cultivation of diverse plant varieties and facilitates student-led sales and projects. During the pandemic, “pay what you can” plant sales supported the community with 14 Discover Western Prince William ■ May 2024 HELP WANTED Part-Time Sales Position • Flexible Schedule • Warrenton Office • Perfect for parent or retiree Help residents learn about the terrific businesses and special organizations in our community through ads and articles. produce donated to local food banks and charities. Additionally, students actively engage in community service, including tree planting and agricultural education initiatives for younger students, and contribute to local events like the Historic Effingham Manor and Winery’s Fall Festival. Key FFA chapter initiatives include partnering with local schools to enhance agricultural literacy and managing essential community projects like food and pet supply drives. On the competitive front, students have gained unique experiences from field renovations to assisting NFL grounds crews, showcasing their skills nationally. Student success stories highlight the practical impact of the curriculum. For instance, a recent graduate interned at Michael Jordan’s golf course, and another became an assistant superintendent after graduating. These achievements underscore the program’s role in shaping industry-ready professionals and leaders. Looking ahead, the BDHS agricultural teacher team plans to expand their offerings and establish a Turfgrass Research Center in collaboration with leading universities by the fall of 2026, further enhancing their students’ practical and research opportunities. The program’s success has made it a cornerstone of their school culture, influencing various aspects of student life and contributing to numerous district and state championships.
