The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission is an
independent statutory body with responsibilities under three Victorian laws:
·
Equal Opportunity Act 2010
·
Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001
·
Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.
Our vision
A community where every person values, understands and respects
human rights and equal opportunity.
Our mission
We work with others to eliminate inequality and build a community that
respects and promotes human rights and equal opportunity.
Our strategic priorities (2014 16)
Targeted impact
We work with many different groups whose rights are being breached and
the organisations that work with them.
Our priority groups are:
· people experiencing racial and religious discrimination and vilification
· people with disability
· women.
Systemic change
We work with employers, government and service providers to equip them
to meet their obligations and drive systemic change.
While we work with all groups with obligations under our laws, our priority
areas are:
· employment
· sport
· the justice system
· the public sector.
We continually monitor the priority areas to identify new areas of need.
Community engagement
We also are working to reach a wider audience of Victorians who have had
little involvement with human rights and equal opportunity in the past by
leading community conversation and empowering all Victorians to act in
support of human rights and equal opportunity.
