studentfocus Being a boarder at Dallam Olaoluwa – a boarder in Year 12, says: In the 6 years that I have been a boarder I can proudly say that I have made lifelong friendships. Dallam was not what I expected at all. Coming to boarding school in the countryside was a scary experience, because it was my first time attending a boarding school and I’m a city boy. I did not expect there to be over 25 nationalities and cultures for me to get to know and understand better. Being a boarder allows you to interact with people from different backgrounds at various age groups. Boarding offers many opportunities for activities during weekdays and weekends that boarders can get involved in and it has very good facilities both at school and in the boarding house. The boarding house has modern accommodation as well as tennis courts, a big playing field and its own sports hall where boarders can enjoy playing various sports and keeping active whatever the weather. The Boarding staff are really supportive and they encourage students of all ages to keep active and to try new things. Seyliayo – a boarder in Year 12, says: Living in a boarding school like this where community spirit is encouraged makes you feel like you have a second family and means you can really enjoy your experience. The rural location of the boarding school means it’s quiet so it’s conducive to study, but if you’re adventurous you can make the most of your surroundings and go for a hike, for example. You get lots of opportunities at Dallam. The teaching staff strive to bring the best out in me. I have developed excellent teacher-student relationships and they encourage me to take part in activities like the Extended Experience, which is great for my UCAS personal statement. I get on well with the boarding staff and they have assisted me in working towards personal goals through a range of activities that have improved my self-sufficiency and independence in preparation for university. During my time in boarding at Dallam I have learned to cultivate a positive mind-set and tackle challenges head on. From getting my academic work done to local volunteering to treating myself to a day in a local spa, I have also learned to find balance between work and play to become a better more well-rounded person. Being a boarder at Dallam has helped me gain many skills such as organisation, punctuality and being more independent. Overall, I would definitely recommend boarding – it has been a great experience and has really helped me through my teenage years. When I leave I will really miss being part of this community and the benefits it has to offer, but I know it is preparing me well for my next step of going to university.
