Do your children love to play games on the iPad? Let them have fun while learning the laws that govern motion. Children will design their own roller coaster track, equipped with unlimited track design options. When the track is completed, they can virtually jump into the roller coaster and see the hairpin turns and zero-g rolls. The app teaches students about the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. They will learn that as the roller coaster goes down the track, potential energy is being converted into kinetic energy. Your children will also learn about speed and acceleration. Acceleration decreases as the coaster goes up and increases as the coaster is going down the track. The student also can chart and monitor g-forces as the coaster goes through the loops and high embankments. Once the iPad app is loaded, it does not require internet connection. Emotional ABC’s: Help Your Child Succeed ($85.00) emotionalabcs.com. This program about emotional literacy for young children focuses on the gamut of emotions children experience and how to process and express these emotions in a healthy manner. The program includes a DVD, activity books, a music CD, playing cards, and magnets. I sat down with my very active, very emotional five-year-old son to view the 40-minute DVD. In part 1 we learned what feelings are, what they look like, and what they feel like. Part 2 focuses on interactive examples of children role-playing anger, sadness, and worry in real-life situations. At the end of each scenario, different options present a way to deal with the emotion, both positive and negative, and the consequences of acting in that manner. An adorable cartoon character named Moody comically demonstrates each emotion and the intensity of the feeling. A reflective phrase is introduced and repeated often to help process the range of emotions: “Pause and breathe, rewind, and play.” In addition to the DVD, the program also includes workbooks that reinforce concepts presented in the DVD and provide additional examples. In the workbook Reading Faces and Bodies, children are asked to look at what Moody is doing in different situations. They are encouraged to focus on his eyebrows, hands, facial expressions, etc., to determine what he is feeling. Other options for reinforcing the concepts include songs and card games. My son enjoyed spending time going through the material, and since the program includes so many options for reinforcement it didn’t bore him. We had some great discussions about the emotions we feel, how it is important to process our emotions before reacting too quickly, and the potential consequences of failing to properly handle emotions. I find all too often that reinforcing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills with my children gets pushed to the background for other pressing homework and learning opportunities. I found this program extremely beneficial to introduce talking about and working through feelings. Instilling a respect for thoughts, feelings, and emotions can help teach and remind children (and adults) that we are the hands and feet of Jesus to this world.
