COUNCIL ON AMERICAN-ISLAMIC RELATIONS
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR-SFBA) is a participant in the Community Leadership Project 2.0. It serves the civil
rights and civic engagement needs of the area's 250,000 American Muslims, promoting
justice, empowering American Muslims and enhancing public understanding of Islam.
Each year, CAIR-SFBA serves nearly 300 Bay Area residents with concerns about
civil rights issues ranging from FBI visits to school bullying, and reaches thousands
more through empowerment workshops held at mosques and community centers.
initiatives
Through our initiatives and special projects, SVCF partners with other foundations,
corporations, nonprofits, donors and government agencies on cross-sector solutions
that multiply our reach and impact. Most of our targeted initiatives are three to six years
in length, but we also take up special projects of shorter duration that are designed for
more immediate impact.
Among our current initiatives: Bridges to Success provides coordinated learning opportunities
for children transitioning from preschool to kindergarten; Raising A Reader San Mateo
County encourages parent-child reading to build language and literacy skills; Silicon Valley
Common Core Initiative (see page 14) and the Community Leadership Project (CLP) 2.0.
CLP 2.0 was created by the David and Lucile Packard, William and Flora Hewlett and
James Irvine foundations to increase the capacity and sustainability of small community-
based organizations serving low-income people and communities of color in the
Bay Area, the central coast and the San Joaquin Valley. In a competitive process, SVCF
was selected to join the CLP 2.0 to work with 10 carefully selected community-based
organizations and award funds over a three-year period.
