20 SVCF 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
Silicon Valley is at the heart of a modern day
renaissance, witnessing unprecedented global
connectivity and technological change. The
entrepreneurial spirit is being unleashed upon
the world's greatest challenges at a critical time
in humankind's shared journey.
We consider Silicon Valley Community Foundation
to be in a unique position of facilitating connections
between visionaries, action-takers and stewards of
capital. Their expertise and networks are opening up new
options for us to make a difference, and we're thrilled
to be working with such a pioneering organization.
The Namaste Foundation (www.namaste.org) is a
philanthropic network that celebrates mission-led
entrepreneurs and nonprofits in their pursuits of
creating a more beautiful world. We're particularly
excited about these themes:
Regenerative Ecology With the unintended
consequences of the industrial age upon us,
initiatives around permaculture, recycled materials,
school gardens and local energy can help us rebuild
and find alignment with our natural environment.
Transformative Education The Internet is redefining
the way we create and access knowledge. Massive
open online courses (MOOCs), Internet-enabled
television and skills-training software are examples
of ways we can facilitate collective progress.
In pursuing our mission, we look to incorporate
these concepts:
Systems Thinking Today's global challenges are
interconnected. By developing solutions in a holistic
way, donors and change-makers can increase their
effectiveness. We like to think of it as "innovation
through integration."
New Economic Models Trends like crowd-
funding, digital currencies and gift economies offer
the potential for better global resource allocation.
The philanthropic community has an opportunity
to experiment with and build upon these tools.
Lessons from Silicon Valley Digital platforms
and decentralized models, combined with creative
team cultures, create a foundation for rapid and
scalable solutions.
