SVCF 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
17
Imagine for a moment an array of several thousand grants made by our individual donors
to thousands of organizations last year, from California to New York, Colombia to Rwanda.
What shape would it take? What themes would emerge? What would it mean?
From our vantage point, we see expressions of the extraordinary human impulse to
create solutions where problems exist. From fighting human trafficking to making sure
community safety-net organizations are here for those in need, our donors invest the
best of what they know and what they have to make the world different, better and --
most of all -- full of opportunity.
As partners with an organization committed to serving San Mateo and Santa Clara
counties, our donors rallied around our call to assist a Pescadero farm-worker community
devastated by a fire last year. They contributed more than $1 million to make sure our region's
children can be successful under the new Common Core standards. They also challenged
each other in conversations we hosted in 2013 about what it means to be an effective
donor in today's increasingly competitive philanthropic landscape. They funded $1.2 million
in scholarships for Silicon Valley students striving to further their educations.
Through it all, we see the best of philanthropy. We witness our donors' desire to challenge
the status quo, inject creativity and push the boundaries of possibility when it comes to
improving our world.
