SVCF 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
15
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are scheduled to be implemented in
California's public schools in the 2014-15 school year. The standards are designed
to help students build higher-order thinking, connect learning to real-world scenarios
and increase literacy, communication skills and knowledge.
Recognizing the opportunity of the CCSS for students in the 54 school districts in
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, in 2013 Silicon Valley Community Foundation
launched the Silicon Valley Common Core Initiative, a three-year effort to foster
collaborative approaches to implementation of CCSS in our region.
To seize this unique moment, SVCF held 20 public information sessions about CCSS
to inform and encourage action from more than 1,500 parents, donors, residents,
community leaders and business leaders.
SVCF also brought together local educators, school districts and administrators to
understand their needs as they work on successful implementation of the new
standards. These sessions helped inform a Request for Proposals (RFP) from school
district collaboratives. We released the RFP in summer, and announced our first
funding for collaboratives in fall 2013.
With our partner foundations, generous individuals and corporate donors, we
raised more than $2 million for the Silicon Valley Common Core Initiative and to
fund the innovative school district collaboratives. Each group received funds to plan
and implement changes in curriculum, professional development, technology
and assessment.
These grants will serve 27 school districts and nearly 150,000 students in San Mateo
and Santa Clara counties, about 80 percent of whom come from low-income households.
