A
n increasing number of college
students are experiencing anxiety
and depression.
University health centers are
reporting that more students than ever before are struggling
through their freshman year. Research conducted in 2009
for the American College Counseling Association reveals
that about 10 percent of the 2.6 million students surveyed
sought counseling. In 1988 58 percent of university health
center directors reported an increase in students with serious
psychological problems. By 2009 that figure had risen to
93.4 percent.
