Hummingbird magnet. Takes a while to settle in, and then whoosh! Will climb on virtually anything, though strong support is essential. Also showy scrambling over the ground. (2gal) Photo: Source CLEMATIS GROUP A: These beautiful climbers will tolerate a fair amount of shade and are non-pruners. They flower early on old wood (wood formed before the onset of winter) and form a considerable woody network over time. Although they look dead in early spring, they come on with a rush and flower profusely from mid to late spring. Flowers are single, and shaped like bells or saucers. Delightful, soft, swirly seed heads throughout summer. No pruning required. Easy. GROUP B: With their large and exceptionally showy flowers, these are the “glitterati” of the clematis world. As with most of the big stars, they’re often high-maintenance, but well worth the effort. The blooms are the largest and most spectacular in the family; singles, semi-doubles and doubles; early, midsummer or late flowering; in reds, pinks, blues, purples, whites and all the in-betweens. Some of the new hybrids flower on both new and old wood, which lengthens the bloom season. In our colder zones, pruning becomes a little simpler. Be patient, wait until early spring and when new growth appears, cut back any dead wood as required. Challenging. GROUP C: These grow on new wood: the growth produced after winter ends. Small flowers in pastels, bicolours, deep blues, pinks, and reds, purest whites and yellows. Almost impossible to kill. Blooms can be single or double, outward facing or pendulous, and shaped like saucers, stars, bells or tulips. A few are scented. Some are nonclinging, and very effective in the perennial border, or grown through roses and shrubs. Be warned. They can become addictive. They’re beautiful and easy, year after year. To prune, cut off last year’s vines to within 12" of the ground in spring. Easy and choice. PRICES: This catalogue lists prices for clematis in one gallon pots. Many will bloom this year, but epxect most to be a year, or perhaps even two years away from a big display. We also have many clematis in two gallon pots. These plants are older and will bloom this year. www.wild-things.ca 131 1-877-538-3228
