GAILLARDIA Blanket Flower A perennial from western North America with large red, orange, yellow or bicoloured daisies with dark centres which bloom continuously from late spring into frost. Gaillardia will tolerate poor soil, as long as it is well-drained, and likes lots of sun for full flower production. Drought tolerant, excellent in the border, in containers, and as a cut flower. Deer don’t love them; butterflies do. Low mats of very shiny, dark green leaves with pretty, pink, urn-shaped flowers in early summer. Fat, ornamental, red berries are edible, as are the leaves, which have a spicy, wintergreen flavour used to flavour gum, etc. Prefers acid soil and makes an easy groundcover under pines, or in dry shade. Leaves are often tinged purple in cold weather. I love to chew on a leaf or berry while gardening or hiking. An essential plant to attract wildlife.
