Leaves emerge chartreuse yellow then brighten to a lighter gold in summer. Thick, puckered, wavy leaves form an upright vase-shaped clump. Bred for its colour, size and slug resistance. Pale violet flowers bloom just above the foliage on proportionate scapes. A new hosta, from Olga Petryszyn, which becomes more striking as the summer deepens. Photo courtesy Walters Gardens, Inc. HOSTA ‘Cool As A Cucumber’ $17.95 28” x 48” Large NEW A large, showy clump of long, tapered leaves with bright green margins and clear white centres. ‘Cool as a Cucumber’ has a distinct upright form in youth and matures into a gracefully arching mound. The green margins streak irregularly into the centre. Creamy white stems carry light lavender flowers. We have had a number of requests for hostas with more white in them, and have moved slowly in our acquisitions because too many white-centred hostas just do not create enough chlorophyll (plant food) to make good garden subjects. We believe ‘Cool as a Cucumber’ should be an exception to the rule because of its breeder and its genetics. The green margins, although narrow, streak into the centre, creating an irregular, eye-catching pattern and should provide enough food to make this hosta brighten any shade garden. Try this one in bright, but indirect light. Photo courtesy Walters Gardens, Inc. www.wild-things.ca 52 1-877-538-3228
