PERENNIALS A plant that lives for more than two years. Perennials, especially small flowering plants, that grow and bloom over the spring and summer, die back every autumn and winter, and then return in the spring from their root-stock, are known as herbaceous perennials. ACANTHUS spinosus $12.95 4' x 4' z5 Bear’s Breeches Large, showy, foxglove-like flowers on tall, thick spikes tower over spectacular foliage. The flowers are white with extensive purple veining and are nestled in dusky purple, spiny bracts from midsummer until late fall. The leaves are very large and deep forest-green, with dramatically jagged edges and coarse, spiny teeth. In fact, their shape was utilized in the carved motifs used to decorate Corinthian columns. Plant in rich, moist soil in sun to part shade. Bear’s Breeches will take a while to establish, but are hardy here without fussing. Acanthus is a good candidate for a large, weed-suppressing groundcover. Give it time; it has world conquering tendencies.
