PLATYCODON grandiflorum ‘Sentimental Blue’ $10.95 6” x 18” z3 Balloon Flower Balloon-like buds open into splendid blue, bell-shaped flowers in midsummer. Easy to grow and a very long-lived perennial, but this variety is only 6" tall, which makes it perfect for containers, an edging plant at the front of the border and in the rock garden. Deeply divided umbrella-like palmate leaves are an unusual grey green. Flowers are showy but hidden under the leaves. The mayapples are an edible, fleshy greenish fruit which turn golden when ripe and are used to make preserves and jellies. Leaves and roots are extremely toxic, however. Mayapple will spread and colonize happily in woodland conditions with moist to dry soil. Also known as mandrake root. Useful as a taller, weed-suppressing native groundcover.
