COREOPSIS Tickseed If you have sun and you like lots of colour, you need coreopsis. These North American native plants produce daisy-like flowers over an exceptionally long period, from early summer right into frost. They make good cut flowers and deadheading increases the bloom period. New varieties are often selfcleaning. Flower colours are often in shades of yellow, but newer genetics allow pink, red, purple and orange tones. Many of the flowers first open in solid colours, but then develop bright streaking as they mature. We have been thrilled to grow coreopsis from breeder Darrell Probst. Many new colours of coreopsis have been bred in the past few years, only to fail after a season in northern gardens. Probst’s introductions change all that. We find them hardy without any special care, and their bloom season is even longer than other varieties. Grow coreopsis in sun to part shade at the front to middle of the border. Because of its long bloom season, it is especially valuable for containers. Coreopsis are drought tolerant. Deer and rabbits don’t like them, but butterflies do.
