Egedal in Denmark were preparing an area of land for a new settlement called Stenløse South. The municipal board decided that this new settlement should be low-energy settlement and introduced as one of the first municipalities in Denmark, special low-energy requirements aimed at the home- owners buying the plots for construction of new houses. The requirements were based on total financial calculations showing reasonable payback times for the extra costs involved in constructing low-energy houses. Next step in the journey was the introduction of new Building Regulations (BR) in Denmark, which tightened the energy requirements compared to the previous BR and the municipality decided to change its own requirements for the Stenløse South area correspondingly. At the same time, the EU-CONCERTO initiative was launched and Cenergia Energy Consultants together with the Municipality decided to propose a project "the Class1" project for this initiative. The Class1 project application was made and seventeen new partners were invited: Eight of these were from Denmark and nine from abroad. Being a CONCERTO project, Class1 had to cover more than the demonstration of new buildings in Stenløse. It was necessary to include energy renovation of public buildings and substantial renewable energy supply in this case large areas of Photovoltaic (PV) systems on municipal buildings. The project also needed to include a research and development part. This evolved into several subparts: A social-economic research part, a monitoring and analysis part and a part covering the development of six key low-energy technologies. The project was completed with the addition of a training part and of course: dissemination to various stakeholders: municipalities, architects, engineers, builders and contractors. The Class1 project commenced in November 2007 and has now after 6 years been completed. This book constitutes an attempt to summarise the results of the pioneering work over these 6 years. It cannot be a complete account of all the tasks carried out, but in its kaleidoscopic way it is hoped that it will give a good impression of the activities, results and experiences and thereby be an inspiration to look for more details in one of the many reports of the projects that can be downloaded from the website. Sincere thanks to all who travelled along. Ove Morck Technical coordinator Cenergia Energy Consultants Herlev Hovedgade 195 st. 2730 Herlev Denmark |
